Discover the crown jewel of Afghan spices — Badakhshan Cumin. Harvested from the remote, high-altitude valleys of Badakhshan province in northeastern Afghanistan, this rare cumin variety is considered by connoisseurs to be among the finest in the world. Growing at elevations above 2,000 metres, in pristine mountain air and mineral-rich glacial soil, these seeds develop an extraordinary concentration of essential oils that simply cannot be replicated in lowland cultivation.
The Mountain King of Cumin
Badakhshan has been a crossroads of the ancient Silk Road for millennia, and its cumin has been traded as a luxury spice for centuries. What sets it apart is its exceptionally long, slender seeds and a flavour profile that is simultaneously warm, sweet, and intensely aromatic — far more nuanced than ordinary cumin. A single pinch transforms a dish. It is the defining spice of authentic Afghan Qorma, slow-braised lamb, and the finest Kabuli Pulao.
Product Highlights
100% Authentic Badakhshan Origin: Sourced directly from high-altitude farms in Badakhshan province — the most prized cumin-growing region in Afghanistan.
Exceptional Essential Oil Content: The extreme altitude and cold nights force the plant to produce a higher concentration of cuminaldehyde, delivering a deeper, longer-lasting aroma.
Hand-Harvested & Sun-Dried: Processed using centuries-old traditional methods — no chemicals, no additives, just pure mountain cumin.
Digestive & Wellness Benefits: Revered in traditional Afghan and Ayurvedic medicine for supporting digestion, reducing bloating, and boosting metabolism.
Available in 100g and 150g sizes to suit both home cooks and serious culinary enthusiasts.
Culinary Excellence
For maximum flavour, dry-toast the seeds in a hot pan for 30–45 seconds until fragrant, then grind or use whole. Add to hot oil at the start of cooking to bloom the spice and infuse your entire dish with its mountain warmth. Exceptional in rice, meat marinades, lentil soups, and spice blends.
